SE Xperia Play prototype gets a thorough review

Unless you’ve been living in a cave for the last month, you know that the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play prototype previews first appeared in a couple of Chinese websites. But here's a more Western-type preview of the device, courtesy of Engadget.com.
There’s not much news as we knew almost everything about the device. The earlier Chinese previews were pretty thorough. The Xperia Play, or the PlayStation phone as it is commonly dubbed, rocks the latest version of Android 2.3 Gingerbread running on a muscular 1Ghz Qualcomm MSM8655 chipset. And let’s not forget the gorgeous 4” LCD screen relying on a Bravia engine for various imaging and video enhancements.

Few user interface improvements over the stock Android experience have been added here and there. For example, just like on the Xperia Arc, the Xperia Play let’s you pinch anywhere on the homescreen, which will group all the widgets in one screen, clicking on a widgets would take you to its homescreen. Also, when tested, the prototype’s 5MP snapper at the back of the device only recorded WVGA videos, which corroborates with the earlier previews. We really hope that Sony Ericsson will allow for 720p recording in the final product.

The reviewer tried a couple of unofficially emulated games from the original PlayStation and GameBoy Advance and reportedly everything worked fine - from the performance down to the assigning of the extended hardware gaming controls (except for the touchpads). We bet the experience with the original PSP emulator will be superior.

The reviewer then summoned the expertise of an experienced gamer and he reports that the XPERIA Play is not balanced as well as the PSP Go with the top being heavier than the lower part. Also he found the shoulder buttons being a wee bit thinner than he'd like (the PSP Go is substantially thicker than the XPERIA Play).
Sony Ericsson is expected to announce the XPERIA PLAY at the MWC 2011 in February. Still, you didn't mind looking at some fresh photos of the Xperia Play now, did you?

Facebook also wanted to make it available to as many people as possible. Similar to the 0.facebook.com site, we've worked with mobile operators from around the world to let you try this without paying for any data charges. The 14 mobile operators listed below are offering free data access when using the new Facebook mobile app during the first 90 days after they launch.

During the next few months, Facebook plan to make the app available through more carriers in other countries so you can have a great mobile Facebook experience no matter what device you use.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play Review

Gone are the times when large display screens and extraordinary features were rare specimens for a mobile handset. Sony Ericsson is one of those few brand names in the mobile industry which have made the public used to surprises. Sony Ericsson Xperia Play is another member in the Xperia family that comes with a list of interesting features.
This handset flaunts a 4inch LCD display screen of FWVGA (854×480 pixels) resolution and a pretty smooth capacitive sensitivity. The exterior of the phone resembles handsets like Sony Ericsson Vivaz but under the hood features have been improved. The 1GHz CPU with a 512 MB of RAM seems like a blessing for a Sony mobile handset. The 5MP camera at the back is fully capable of recording HD 720 P videos which is feature that makes Xperia play reach up to the league of phones like Apple’s iPhone. The point which makes this handset superior to high end phones like HTC Desire and Dell XCD 35 is that it runs on Android 2.3 rather than the usual 2.2 version. The 1500 mAh battery is like the point which seals the deal when it comes to the selling point of this mobile phone.

The reason why this handset is called Play is because it has a slider which reveals the gaming console (Like sony PSP GO) of this handset making it one of the most desirable gaming phones ever. The only point of worry could be the music player as it doesn’t produce the quality of sound expected from this great piece. Other than that, this is one handset that proves to be a complete device.

Window 7 Phone review: HTC HD7

A responsive touchscreen, a relatively cool camera and a decent interface, but can Windows 7-powered HTC HD 7 really help Microsoft gain a foot in the smartphone market already crowded by the likes of iPhone and numerous Android-powered devices?

One look at this device and I can confidently say NO! In fact, the biggest letdown of HD7 is ironically the feature that should have been its weapon of choice to help it take its fight to the enemy camp some distance. The smartphone that carries a rather expensive price tag of Rs 30,000 is hugely dependent on Microsoft Windows Marketplace, which is yet to make its India debut and is only expected to be launched after two to three months.

This means that to download even a basic app like Facebook, Twitter or YouTube, you will be left stranded by the seller despite having paid a bomb to acquire this dud. What were you thinking HTC and Airtel? People don't buy dud phones at Rs 30K, do they?

To start with, HD 7 is a solid, neat-looking black-coloured device -- albeit a tad too big to hold unlike an average smartphone -- and thin compared to its build. The smartphone measures 4.8 inches tall by 2.7 inches wide by 0.4 inch thick and weighs 162 gram. It sports a 4.3-inch touchscreen (480 X 800 WVGA), largest in the current breed of Windows Phone 7 smartphones, with two speakers spanning the entire display at the top and bottom. It has a metallic band running through the circumference of the phone with volume rocker, a two-stage camera button and a handy lock button at the top.

At the bottom, the phone houses a micro-USB port and a standard 3.5mm headphone jack. Just below the display is the back, start, and search buttons powered by Microsoft Bing.

The phone's build quality seems rock solid except for a rather flimsy quality plastic back cover which does not inspire confidence about how long it may last. HD7 has a kickstand covering the camera at back which when opened can help you take pictures and enjoy hands-free videos and music. Removal of battery and SIM is quite easy compared to many phones.

One of its biggest plus USP is its large built-in keypad which makes it ideal for browsing and using the Microsoft Office programmes. For messaging too, the touch sensitivity is quite good and auto correction gives closest results. The phone's Home button takes you to a list of tiles and apps list that has rather large, but reading-friendly icons. Which also means you may end up scrolling down and down to locate your favourite app. Especially, with no Folders around.

From the Home button you land at the Windows Phone 7 interface that takes you to a list of tiles and apps. Swiping right on the screen shows up a list of apps that are either built-in or the ones you have downloaded. Folders would have made life much nicer.

Coming to the phone's 5-megapixel shooter, the camera has an auto-focus, dual LED flash and can record 720p HD video. The camera makes up for good pictures that can be further jazzed up with the effects, scenes, resolutions and flicker adjustment. However, the camera interface came out to be pretty simple and flat. There is a built-in Photo Enhancer app that lets you play around with effects, found in any other basic phone.

The phone also bundles HTC Hub that houses apps like Sound Enhancer, YouTube, Notes, Flashlight and Xbox Live games, but be warned you would be unable to download many of the apps which is a pity indeed.

Microsoft has bundled Bing Maps in the HTC HD7, which comes out to be a surprise winner. It can be easy crowned as one of the best mobile mapping applications, giving accurate and clear results. The double tap on the screen to center lets you zoom in on a spot. You can also add a push pin to Maps if in case you want to remember a place or mark your location.

Another app that gets a complete thumbs up is Microsoft Office programme that offers Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint and OneNote. Microsoft's OneNote lets you track your shopping list, meeting notes and your to-dos. To jazz it up, you can add audio and pictures. With OneNote you can virtually record your entire meeting or an interview. All this particularly helps if you are used to working in a Windows environment on the computer.

Xbox Live coming to HTC HD7 is another to-die-for feature in the Windows-powered device. But with no Windows Marketplace in India around, this feature too won't excite you.

HTC HD7 also comes pre-installed with Microsoft's very own Internet Explorer sitting right on the Home Screen. The browsing experience seems to be satisfactory with pinch and tap for zoom functions. Also, the large display makes up for easy reading and watching videos.

I found the phone's battery to be impressive after a good session of Internet browsing and calling. But, the real battery test remains as the phone hasn't opened up to the real battery-hogging applications that could have come from the Windows Marketplace.

On connectivity front, the phone offers 3G, Wi-Fi (802.11b/g/n), Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP and GPS. HD 7 comes with 1GHz Snapdragon processor and 512MB ROM/576MB RAM and 16GB memory capacity. However, there is no card slot to further boost the memory count which is quite strange in this age.

Coming to the most important part, is it worth a buy at Rs 30,000? With Microsoft saying it is still three months away from the Marketplace launch, HD7 is a complete no no until then. Especially when you have Android hitting the market with dozens of capable and cheaper devices and boasting of over two lakh applications.

Motorola Xoom

Motorola Xoom Zoom Specs, Design, Price & Pictures

Here comes the sequel to the Smartphones war in the telecom industry - the Tablet War. 2010 was supposed to be the Year of the Tablet. That did not really happen — the flood of product was reduced to a trickle, as many manufacturers awaited a more tablet-friendly operating system from Google. So, once again, with all the optimism in the air, 2011 will be the Year of the Tablet. Several new models have either been released, or are in a very advanced state of preview. One such tablet is the Motorola Xoom tablet, which the company hopes will dethrone Apple’s iPad in this fast-growing market segment. The Motorola Xoom tablet has won the Cnet CES 2011 Best in Show award, beating out its counterparts.

One step ahead of the Samsung Galaxy tab which runs on Google’s Android 2.2 operating system, Motorola Xoom tablet will be the first device to run the latest version of Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS (Honeycomb supports multitasking and has been designed explicitly for devices with larger screen sizes, such as tablets. Some upgrades include tabbed browsing, form auto-fill, syncing with your Google Chrome bookmarks, and incognito mode for private browsing. Also, it comes with built-in gyroscope, barometer, e-compass, accelerometer and adaptive lighting so that users would be able to enjoy new types of applications on it.)

Some Impressive Hardware specs of Motorola Xoom Tablet :
  • a dual core Tegra 2 processor with each core running at 1 GHz,
  • 10.1-inch touchscreen display(larger than the iPad’s 9.7 inches),
  • a 1,280×800 resolution (compared with the iPad’s 1,024×768)
  • HDMI output,
  • 1GB DDR2 RAM,
  • 32GB onboard memory (expendable via SD card support expandable to 32GB),
  • 5 megapixel rear camera with dual LED flash and 2 megapixel front-facing camera for video conferencing., including one that can record in HD(none in the current version of the iPad.)
  • a Bluetooth keyboard
  • three accessories: a leather case that doubles as a stand, a standard dock for charging and display, and a “speaker HD” dock. The latter includes three USB ports, HDMI output, and built-in speakers.

As far as the estimated price is concerned, the information is not official. The price tag is bound to kill the excitement for those who were hoping Xoom to be priced lower than Apple’s iPad.

BlackBerry Dakota leaked

BlackBerry Dakota photo and specifications leaked

Great news for all BlackBerry lovers! A new photo of the BlackBerry Dakota leaked today and it looks just like its prototype the Magnum, which we covered almost a year ago. The only thing different is the trackpad that has been added to the device and the bump in some of the specifications.
This BlackBerry, codenamed Dakota, will pack a 2.8-inch capacitive touchscreen with a VGA resolution of 640x480 pixels and a full physical QWERTY keyboard. It also rocks a 5 MP camera with flash capable of recording HD video. Also available are 4GB of internal storage and 768MB of RAM. What processor will power it is still unknown, though.
A great addition is the 3G mobile hotspot that has been added, allowing the Dakota to spread some Internet love to other devices around. Not to mention the NFC connectivity. The Wi-Fi N, Bluetooth and MicroUSB port come as no surprise.
In addition, the Dakota is going to ship with the new BlackBerry 6.1, announced yesterday at the BlackBerry DevCon Asia. The new version of the BlackBerry platform now supports Magnetometer and Digital compass APIs, OpenGL-ES 2.0, event-base geo-fencing location APIs and much more.
Pricing and availability for the BlackBerry Dakota are still shady. Who knows, maybe RIM will shed some light to the Dakota at the World Mobile Congress.

Nokia N9 to launch in February at MWC

We’ve been hearing about the Nokia N9 for almost 6 months now, but it may only be another 6 weeks until it finally makes its first public appearance.
According to a Twitter conversation, theMeeGo-equipped Nokia N9 looks set to make its début appearance at February’s Mobile World Congress.
Nokia blogger @JosueGimenez posted: “OK guys, I repeat the the message for you, the Nokia #N9 will be announced in the MWC”, adding that it will be available to punters towards the end of March.
Specs-wise, no new details have been revealed. According to previous rumours, we can expect the Nokia N9 to launch with a 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a 4.2 inch AMOLED touchscreen, a slide out QWERTY keypad, a 12 megapixel camera with 720p HD video capture, 3G and WiFi connectivity and 64GB of internal storage. As we reported last month, the handset is also expected to feature a dedicated gaming engine, supporting a display of 190 million polygons/second.
If the rumours are true, we only have a month to wait until we finally get to see the hotly-anticipated Nokia N9.

Samsung-Star-II.jpg
Smartphones are the devices which are here to stay and almost anywhere you turn your head, you’ll see mobile brands producing Smartphones. Samsung Star 2 S5260 is a Smartphone produced by Samsung, which is one of the leading mobile phone brands out there. This full touch screen handset comes in a white colour and is home to impressive features.
The 3 inch capacitive touchscreen might not be too huge but provides quite a smooth touch sensitivity and pixel count making it better than Nokia 5800 which is otherwise considered as a good medium ranged touch phone. Along with GPRS, Samsung Star 2 S5260 offers EDGE as well thus making internet connectivity extremely accessible. Other connectivity options offered are Bluetooth, USB port facility and Wi-Fi. The 3.2 MP camera which comes fitted with this mobile phoneis one of the good features as it offers a resolution count which is enough to provide good and sharp image clarity. The music player offered supports quite a few formats like MIDI, WAV and MP3 which enable a lot of music options. Plus the audio clarity and volume range offered are of superior quality as well. One feature of great importance is the support of office docs on this phone.
The battery of this mobile phone has been worked upon as compared to its successor Samsung Star but still doesn’t deliver a good talk time considering its medium budget price. Another point which might not go down too well with the users is its video player. The recording feature is abrupt and not too smooth. Overall Samsung Star 2 S5260 makes for a good handset but would have been better if it was available at a lower price.
